2016 in Lists: Spiritual Truths I’ve Learned…

I guess you’re always supposed to feel like you’re getting closer to God so that a remark like “this year I felt like I got closer to God” is a no-brainer. That may be the case, but per #9 below, it’s worth saying because I feel it’s true.

Every time I feel like I’ve got it figured out, I get a wake up call from God through my wife or a podcast or a student or a book that sends me back to prayer and supplication.

Here are some things I’ve put together this year, with the added caveat that “put together” means “come to appreciate with my mind and sometimes my heart with the understanding that I don’t always follow through.” Per #6, every “you” in the list below is a substitute for “Jonathan Sircy.”

  1. The opposite of love is fear, not hate.
  2. God is worth praising simply because of who He is.
  3. God is worth praising because of what He’s doing for others as much, if not more, than what He’s done for you.
  4. Real education is a form of discipleship.
  5. Faith-integration can be a temptation because it makes you focus exclusively on how God relates to your work instead of how everything you do–work, family, etc.–relates to God.
  6. The change you seek to make begins with you.
  7. Ask God questions.
  8. After you ask, stop and listen.
  9. Believing something is accurate with your head is not the same as holding something true in your heart.
  10. Love casts out fear.
